Solihull War Memorial by St Alphege Church

Solihull War memorial by St Alphege Church.

If you take the small side road that goes past St Alphege Church in Solihull, then you will pass the Tall Solihull War Memorial. Originally unveiled on the 21st June 1921 by the Earl of Craven; the war memorial was moved a few meters in 1994 to allow for safer viewing and also restored in 2009. It now includes the First and Second World War as well as the Korean War.

solihull war memorial panels

I am assuming that the panels without a date are from the First World War. So many names all killed in the course of this thing called war. Such a waste of lives. Still no Frederick Ward, my great uncle that was killed in the 1939 - 45 war. He lived on valley Road which is in the Parish of Elmdon, once in Sheldon and now in Solihull. But I still have not found his name on a local memorial. More memorials to come in later blogs.

    1. Thank you for pointing this out. I knew that i would miss someone - no matter how carefully I checked. Have now added him into the list. Regards Sue

  2. Thank you, I have the original post-card (with the steeple not leaning quite so far over!) My interest is not in the Memorial, but inside the church, a brass plaque in memory of a great-uncle Pte John T Johnson of 14th Kings Hussars, erected in 1904. He died in Pietermaritzburg, Natal during the Anglo-Boer War.

    1. I have the Boer war medal awarded to your great-uncle. Do you have any details about him, where he was born, lived etc. ?

  3. I also have the original postcard that I photographed above. Just one of the many hundreds that were produced over the years of this memorial.

It was a Valentine's card sent by Winifred to Mrs J Cuss, her nan in Cirencester. It was sent from Solihull on the 14th August 1964.

I have yet to photograph the memorials inside the church. I have recorded and photographed some graves in the small church yard. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my blog. Sue
